Netflix viewers were recently treated to a little West Wing reunion on its hit political drama The Diplomat, thanks to the arrival of Bradley Whitford in Season 4 of the drama, who joined fellow The West Wing alum Allison Janney in a pivotal role. Now, the streamer is bringing back the iconic political drama itself, five years after it left the platform. The West Wing originally exited Netflix in 2020 and moved to HBO Max, where it found a new audience and regularly climbed the service’s charts. Netflix has now quietly re-licensed the beloved series, and it’s set to return to the platform just in time for the holiday season.
Created by Aaron Sorkin, The West Wing is widely considered one of the greatest political dramas ever made, and often ranked among the best TV series of all time, regardless of genre. The show premiered on NBC in September 1999 and ran for seven critically acclaimed seasons, concluding in May 2006. Anchored by a powerhouse ensemble cast including Whitford, Janney, Martin Sheen, Janel Moloney, Stockard Channing, Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Richard Schiff, and the late John Spencer, the series explores the inner workings of the White House during the two-term presidency of Democratic U.S. President Josiah Bartlet. Check out the synopsis below:
“Cutthroat presidential advisers get their personal lives hopelessly tangled up with professional duties as they try to conduct the business of running a country. Fictional Democratic President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet suffers no fools, and that policy alienates many. He and his dedicated staffers struggle to balance the needs of the country with the political realities of Washington, D.C., working through two presidential terms that include countless scandals, threats and political scuffles, as well as the race to succeed Bartlet as the leader of the free world.”
Lauded by political science experts and real-life public figures, The West Wing earned widespread acclaim for its grounded depiction of government, its idealistic yet nuanced view of public service, and the sharp, rapid-fire dialogue that became Sorkin’s trademark. The series was an awards powerhouse throughout its run, collecting 26 Primetime Emmy Awards, including four consecutive wins for Outstanding Drama Series. Its influence stretched far beyond entertainment, even shaping how many viewers understood the workings of the White House. Today, it holds an 81% critics’ score and an impressive 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
When Is ‘The West Wing’ Returning to Netflix?
According to a new report, The West Wing is slated to return to Netflix U.S. mid-December, though the date may shift to sometime within the second week of the month. Its comeback continues a growing trend of Netflix re-licensing major titles after years away. Recent examples include Scandal, Spartacus, and Nurse Jackie. With the exception of Scandal, those aforementioned shows have a sequel series currently in development, which naturally raises speculation about whether The West Wing could follow suit. Nothing official has been announced, but creator Aaron Sorkin, while celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary last year, did seem open to the idea.
The West Wing arrives on Netflix this December and is likely to continue streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned for updates.
