Pierce Brosnan has played many iconic roles in his long and illustrious career, including 007 himself, James Bond. He is currently being commended for his performance in the new British crime drama, MobLand, where he shares screen with A-list stars like Tom Hardy and Helen Mirren. One might have missed his underrated superhero role as Doctor Fate in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, which underperformed at the box office before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the reins of the DC Universe. While Gunn has made a clean transition from the old DCEU to his DCU, Brosnan hints that Dr. Fate could be resurrected in the new universe.
Brosnan was part of the superhero ensemble in the Black Adam movie, which did not do well at the box office. While the overall movie was rejected by the fandom, individual performances did make an impact, including Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. In a new interview with GQ, the actor revealed that he’s heard Gunn has plans for Dr Fate in the upcoming Superman sequel and beyond. He revealed, “I’ve heard that Doctor Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie. I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman.”
When asked if he’d be interested in donning the cape once again, the actor said, “I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it,” he says. With John Cena’s Peacemaker season 2, Gunn has set the precedent that some characters and actors from the previous canon might crossover into his universe, so Brosnan’s Doctor Fate could potentially return. However, given there are no official confirmations about the series or character returning, fans for now should keep their expectations in check.
What To Expect From ‘Man of Tomorrow’
After the success of David Corenswet-led Superman, the DC universe is in full motion with projects like Clayface and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, which will also mark the return of DC vet Jason Momoa in a new role. The second installment in the Superman franchise, titled Man of Tomorrow, was also announced, wherein Superman and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) will team up against the new big bad, Brainiac. Gunn previously told Collider:
“I like my movies to be different. Guardians 1 is not the same as Guardians 3. They’re different. And Man of Tomorrow will not be the same as Superman. And it is Lex’s story too, so it’s the two of them. That colors it in a totally different way.”
Superman is streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
