Landman returned for a much-anticipated second season on Sunday, November 16, reuniting viewers with Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) for another season of chaos. Season 2 was better received by critics, currently boasting an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to its predecessor’s 78% score. While the show was a hit with viewers in Season 1, the new season has not carried the same acclaim. Landman Season 2 is currently rated 36% on Rotten Tomatoes by fans, which is less than half of its Season 1 score. While critics praise the series for finding its footing in this season, viewers remain unimpressed with the first episode, which features more of what viewers disliked about the season.
In Season 2, Tommy’s ex-wife, Angela (Ali Larter), returns home on a more permanent basis, doing her best to balance being a mother and a wife. However, it doesn’t take much to set her off. Many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes highlight this as the season’s weakness, as Angela and her daughter, Ainsley (Michelle Randolph), receive even more screen time. In his review for Collider, Jeff Ewing noted that the characters barely change in the three episodes available for review. He wrote:
One of the biggest issues with Landman is that events happen, circumstances change, but characters largely don’t. Thornton embodies his role well, but Tommy’s a capable relic, dragging his feet any time something might alter his course. His ex-wife Angela is an interesting source of positivity and intensity — and Larter is regularly solid and always watchable in the role — but changes relatively little, while daughter Ainsley doesn’t meaningfully evolve at all.
What Is ‘Landman’ About?
Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, Landman is set in West Texas and explores the oil boomtowns, the people who work in them, those who profit from them, and the consequences for local ecosystems. In the new season, more oil means more trouble ahead for Tommy. His threshold for breaking is closer than he knows — MTex, Cami (Demi Moore), and his own life will push him over faster than he can anticipate. It’s not a battle for riches; it’s a brutal war for survival. Other cast members include Sam Elliott (T.L.), Andy Garcia (Galino), Jacob Lofland (Cooper), Paulina Chavez (Ariana), Kayla Wallace (Rebecca), Mark Collie (Sheriff Walt), James Jordan (Dale), and Colm Feore (Nathan). New episodes of Landman Season 2 stream on Paramount+ on Sundays. In next week’s episode, Cami’s resolve is tested as she gets blindsided while Tommy warns Cooper of the potential repercussions of his deals.
