Why isn’t Shedeur Sanders the Cleveland Browns‘ current starting quarterback?

This isn’t a new topic. That’s been one of the prevailing questions for the team dating back several months, especially in the wake of expected lowlights from the incumbent starter, Deshaun Watson, who once faced more than 20 allegations of sexual misconduct in what the NFL would later refer to as “predatory behavior.” As the Browns get ready for a big AFC North matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, Sanders still isn’t the starter. The job belongs to Watson until further notice.

Huh. What gives? Doesn’t Watson stink? Wouldn’t it behoove the Browns to play a younger player who, theoretically, has more upside as a potential franchise passer?

Well, the issue is that, over the last two games, at least, Watson has been kind of OK! No one is going to write home about Watson looking fine against middling NFC South competition like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers in a two-game winning streak, but he also wasn’t terrible. He is, in fact, part of the reason the Browns are currently in a four-way tie for first place in the AFC North.

That’s the dilemma here for Sanders. He probably does deserve an earnest opportunity to play eventually, but it’s unclear when that chance will come with what seems like an old-school coach in Todd Monken. For now, as long as Watson avoids stringing together awful performances week after week again, Sanders will probably have to get used to roaming the sideline during games for a little while.

I’m sure Sanders is getting impatient with the reality of his situation. Any competitor would be. But hey, that’s why they say patience is a virtue.
