Scott Shanle hasn’t minced any words when it comes to Derek Carr. The former Super Bowl champion and longtime New Orleans Saints linebacker shared his “two cents” in reaction to news that Carr leaked the news about his shoulder injury, possibly to avoid “the Kirk Cousins treatment” with the Saints looking to draft a rookie quarterback who might take his job.
“If he’s pouting because the Saints are gonna look for a young QB in the draft he’s too thin skinned to be your quarterback and the guys in that locker room deserve better,” Shanle wrote on social media, “A competitive person would say it’s time to play so well the young guy won’t touch the field anyways. Nothing is promised to anyone in the NFL. Everyone’s time comes to an end. Nobody is owed anything.”
Shanle added that if Carr is really injured, he ought to be at the team facility working with team doctors and speaking with surgery specialists, not hanging out with his brother in Fresno: “Mrs Benson didn’t pay you 40 million dollars a year to do car reviews on YouTube. Tough times will always reveal a man’s character.”
Whew. Shanle saw firsthand what goes into being a franchise quarterback when he walked into the locker room every day to find Drew Brees was already there, working hard to play his best football. But Brees is, as Shanle says, one of one. Carr was always going to be chasing his legacy when the Saints first signed him. Nobody could have expected he would fall this far short.
