Hello everyone, and welcome to the live blog for the Sri Lanka vs India 1st Test in Galle. 

This is a crucial encounter for both sides as they need points to stay afloat in the World Test Championship cycle. Sri Lanka will sense an opportunity to beat the visitors, as they know the conditions well and India’s frailty against spin is not a secret anymore.

Jadeja finally manages to break the partnership as he dismisses the Sri Lankan skipper for 59. The Sri Lankans still have a massive total ahead of them but with Dickwella now on the crease, it will be once again on him to carry the hosts to a draw.

Half centuries for De Silva and Dinusha

After his masterful century in the first innings, Dinusha follows it up with what can be a match-saving fifty. Meanwhile, on the other end, skipper Dhananjaya De Silva is playing a captain’s innings, holding his wicket while rotating the strike. The hosts still need 200+ runs on the board, but the duo is not about to give up.

India have some near misses

A couple of early appeals came from Jadeja, who twice gestured that he’d got the edge from Dinusha’s bat, but both times the umpire shook his head as India looked to take those six wickets early on and seal the win. With a hundred runs coming on board, it is now up to the duo of De Silva and Dinusha to save the hosts on the final day.

Sri Lanka ends day 4 with 84 runs on the board and still 288 runs remaining for the hosts to win the game. With the ball spinning, it will be India’s chance to win an away game after a long time. Meanwhile, the first innings’ saviour, Dinusha, is still on the crease.

Sri Lanka continue to struggle against India

The hosts have already lost four wickets with more than 300 runs still left on the board. With their top order being sent back to the dressing room by India’s pace attack. Now it is back to Dinusha to save Sri Lanka from a mammoth task.

A slight rain delay but the run chase begins

There was a slight rain delay during the Tea break but the run chase has now begun. Sri Lanka still needs 363 runs to win.

Great session for the Lankans as they get rid of the Indian top order. Devdutt Padikkal closely misses out on a half-century.

Sri Lanka gets rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the very first over and now KL Rahul has also departed. Dinesh Chandimal picked up an injury during fielding and has been taken to hospital for further treatement. India 72/2.

Sri Lanka have folded for 284, and stumps are drawn on day three. The rain Gods have interrupted once again, and the ground has been covered completely again. The groundsmen had a chat with the umpires, and the match officials have decided to call it a day.

Prasidh Krishna finally breaks the partnership

After trying for two sessions, Krishna finally gets the game going as he dismisses Dickwella for 80 (115). The fast bowler finally got that good-length ball, and as the Sri Lankan tried to chase it, it went right into the hands of Rishabh Pant.

TEA: This session completely belonged to the hosts as they scored 116 runs in 29 overs at a run-rate of 4.00. Dinusha and Dickwella managed to hold onto their wickets as Sri Lanka aims to end the day without throwing any more dismissals.

100-run-partnership comes between Dinusha and Dickwella

Both Dinusha and Dickwella have hit half-centuries to power themselves towards a 100-run partnership. The wicketkeeper batter hit a 50+score for the first time in three years. Meanwhile, Dinusha remained crucial at the other end.

The duo of Niroshan Dickwella and Sonak Dinusha have grounded Sri Lanka’s innings. The two have put on a 50-run partnership and are counting towards making it three digits as India continues to try to break the duo.

Lunch: Not even hundred runs on board

The hosts haven’t even reached a hundred runs and half the batting order is already back in the dressing room. Jadeja gets Dhananjaya De Silva out as the skipper walks off the ground.

More wickets fall as Sri Lanka continue to struggle

Lahiru Udara and Kamindu Mendis are quickly sent to the dressing room as well after Kuldeep Yadav dismisses Mendis before Suthar picked the second wicket of his day in the form of Udara. Sri Lanka meanwhile, continue to struggle in their own backyard.

Indian bowlers continue to mount pressure on SL

Dinesh Chandimal gets dismissed by Manav Suthar to give India their second breakthrough. Sri Lanka already look to be on the ropes with two wickets in eight overs.

India start strong with a first-over wicket

Practice match hero Mohammad Siraj strikes in the first over dismissing Nishan Madushanka with the second ball of the innings for a duck.

Asitha Fernando manages to dismiss Prasidh Krishna within moments of the morning session of Day 3 with India getting all out at a respectable total of 462. Now it’s upto India’s spinners to make short work of the Islanders.

India cross the 450-run mark and will hope to reach 500 in the first session and pile on the pressure on the Lankans. 

India inching closer to 400-run mark

The visitors lose one more wicket as Jadeja departs but they are inching closer to the 400-run mark. 

TEA: India have lost three wickets in this session, and Sri Lanka are on top at the moment. Keshara and Jayasuriya have been hard to read, and Padikkal fell to the latter. Jadeja and Jurel have to steady the Indian ship.

India lose two quick wickets

India have lost Pant & Rahul early after play resumed on Day 2. Padikkal & Jurel have to build a partnership as the spinners are now starting to have a say in the proceedings.

New ball does the trick for Sri Lanka

A big one for Sri Lanka as Pant goes for 39. Silva throws the new ball to Keshara, and he gives the breakthrough. Pant steps out, the ball turns away from him, and the wicketkeeper throws his wicket away again.

The Indian batters are in the centre, and we will have some action in Galle after a lengthy delay.

It has been raining cats and dogs in Galle, and the morning session will see a delayed start. The rain has finally stopped and there will be an inspection at 1:40 pm.

A gritty half-century from Rahul and some steady hitting from Padikkal have helped India get to 150 in the second session on day one. Barring that unfortunate run-out of Jaiswal, the Indian batters have not put a foot wrong so far. Incredible Test batting from the top order.

The wicket does not have any demon on day one, and the Indian batters are making the most of it. Yes, the odd ball has turned, but it is still a very good wicket to bat on. Rahul is playing a patient innings, scoring 32* from 77, while Padikkal seems to have found his rhythm.

Solid start from India cut short by Jaiswal run out

It was a steady start from India as both openers, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, were playing sensible cricket until a brain fade moment cost India their opening wicket. A misunderstanding between Jaiswal and Rahul allowed Sri Lanka to claw their way back into the game as the former was run out.
