Houston Astros right-hander Cristian Javier goes on injured list, ending his season

SEATTLE – The Houston Astros placed Cristian Javier on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, a day after the right-hander left his start against the Mariners with a right groin injury.

Houston selected left-hander Josh Hendrickson from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace Javier on the roster. Jake Meyers was placed on the 60-day injured list to create a 40-man roster spot for Hendrickson.

Javier left his outing Tuesday after two innings, later saying through an interpreter he believed he would “be able to make my next start.” His placement on the injured list rules that out and ends his regular season.

The groin issue concludes a frustrating regular season for Javier, who missed three months to a shoulder strain and finishes with a 5.14 ERA in 63 innings in the fourth season of a five-year, $64 million extension. He posted a 1.96 ERA in four outings in September, making the injury even more untimely.

Javier had regained a footing as the Astros’ fourth starter after Hunter Brown, Peter Lambert and Hayden Wesneski. He would have been on turn to pitch in their regular-season finale against the A’s on regular rest, though the state of the Astros’ playoff pursuit will impact pitching plans for that game.

Houston entered Wednesday tied atop the American League West with the Rangers, against whom it has the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Hendrickson, 29, spent the full minor-league season at Triple-A Sugar Land, where he posted a 4.75 ERA over 23 outings, including 19 starts. The native of Perth, Australia, has pitched in parts of five seasons in the minors and has yet to make his major-league debut.

Meyers, the Astros’ opening day center fielder who was optioned to Triple-A in early July, was recently ruled out for the rest of the season after fouling a ball off his knee at Sugar Land on Sept. 11.
