CLEVELAND — Guardians manager Stephen Vogt‘s lineup cards might be covered in eraser marks and Wite-Out these days.

The Guardians added a few veteran hitters at the trade deadline to help to re-shuffle the middle of the lineup with Jo Adell and Nathaniel Lowe. Others, such as infielder Angel Genao, were recently promoted and have made their mark.

Then there’s a series of injuries and banged-up hitters who are shifting in and out of availability.

“We’re pretty banged up right now,” Vogt said this week. “We’re pretty banged up on the position player side, so we’e got a lot of guys we’re monitoring.”

Outfielder Chase DeLauter is nursing a left hamstring injury. He took batting practice on the field before Cleveland’s shutout loss to the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 19, but he wasn’t available during the game.

Then there’s outfielder Jo Adell, who obliterated a 455-foot home run and drove in six runs in the Guardians’ Aug. 18 win over the Giants, but he also fouled a ball off his left knee and is considered day-to-day. Like DeLauter, Adell wasn’t available off the bench Aug. 19 as the Guardians routinely came up short, racking up strikeouts with the potential tying run on base in a 1-0 loss to the Giants.

Their status moving forward will be a day-by-day situation.

First baseman Rhys Hoskins, who was playing through a back injury, was placed on the injured list Aug. 19 with lower back inflammation. Utility man David Fry was recalled in his place to add a right-handed hitter to the bench.

“We had a need to get a right-handed bat that can play first base here,” Vogt said. “David fits that and he also gives us some much-needed versatility. We haven’t had a whole lot of versatility on our roster the last few weeks.”

Hoskins is hitting .179 with a .682 OPS and 13 home runs this season. The back issue eventually became unmanageable, and it required an MRI and a trip to the IL.

“He’d been dealing with that over the last, how many days now, 10 days, two weeks?” Vogt said. “Then last night, just kind of felt it during the game, felt like he wasn’t himself.”

Hoskins playing through some back discomfort, while the statuses of Adell and DeLauter were unclear leading up to the game. There’s also star third baseman Jose Ramirez, who returned from hamate born surgery a few weeks ago.

All of it has led to a scuffling Guardians offense lacking a quality of consistency while they try to chase down a playoff spot in both the American League Central and AL Wild Card races.

“I have a lot of pencils and erasers when it comes to making my lineups out,” Vogt said. “It’s hard when you have impact guys that you don’t know day-to-day when they’re sign to go, if they can, who can and when.

“Everybody’s trying to step up and all of our guys are going to get opportunities, but it’s difficult when you have guys that are day-to-day, especially the impact that these guys have.”
