A new quarterback has arrived in East Rutherford, with the New York Giants deciding to trade for Minnesota Vikings signal-caller JJ McCarthy. The former Michigan Wolverines star and College Football Playoff national champion gets a fresh start with the Giants, and that could also mean a return to the bench for Jameis Winston.
Even after New York defeated the Tennessee Titans, 12-7, at MetLife Stadium with Winston as the starter under center, the NFC East team went ahead and let go of a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to acquire McCarthy.

Winston is expected to remain as New York’s starter, at least in Week 4, when the team takes on the Arizona Cardinals at home this coming Sunday. But the move on McCarthy could suggest that Winston’s time as the starter is on a countdown.
Winston is Open to Being Joined in Routine by Giants Newcomer McCarthy

McCarthy still needs to adjust to his new surroundings and familiarize himself with New York’s offense, giving Winston more time to enjoy his QB1 role he inherited following the devastatating season-ending injury suffered by Week 1 starter Jaxson Dart in Week 2.
For what it’s worth, Winston is welcoming of McCarthy, as he’s even extended an invite to his routine.

“What I want for myself, I want for everyone. If he wants to join the routine, he’s definitely welcome,” the former Florida State Seminoles star Winston told reporters on Wednesday, via SNY Giants.
Through three weeks, New York is just 28th in the league with an average of only 15.3 points and 29th in total offense with 271.3 total yards per outing. But with a 2-1 record and with still a long season ahead, New York can’t just take their foot off the pedal and let the flow dictate its fate the rest of the way.
