David Byrne is married!
Byrne, 73, tied the knot with businesswoman Mala Gaonkar in a private wedding in September, less than a month after he subtly revealed their engagement, according to his profile in The New Yorker published on Monday, Nov. 10.
In the interview, Byrne opened up about his decision to tie the knot again, having previously been married to costume designer and artist Adelle Lutz.
“I said I would never get married again, after I got divorced,” Byrne said. “It was just working out really well, so we said, ‘Well, let’s do this for our friends and family.’ ”

PEOPLE reached out to Byrne’s representatives for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.
Byrne announced on Sept. 1 that he was getting married that month, along with a playlist he curated for his wedding dinner.
“I’m getting married this week and made an almost entirely instrumental playlist while our guests eat an amazing and spicy dinner,” Byrne wrote on his Instagram Stories at the time.
“My sense is that words & lyrics can be distracting – the ear goes to them, especially if it’s a song one knows. So, I opted for buoyant instrumentals that will create a hopeful and joyous atmosphere… and that folks can also ignore at the same time.”
The “Dinner Music” wedding playlist has 42 songs with a heavy emphasis on Latin music, and a nearly two and a half hour-long runtime. A few artists featured include El Alfa, Meridian Brothers, Romperayo, Mexican Institute of Sound, and Son Rompe Pera.

The “Psycho Killer” singer announced his engagement to Gaonkar in an interview with The Times published on Aug. 16. He referred to her as his “fiancée” while discussing the song “Moisturizing Thing” on his new album Who Is The Sky? which released on Friday, Sept. 5.
“My fiancée will sometimes come at me with greasy hands, ready to smear my face. And at one point I thought, ‘What if I wake up and really looked younger?’ ” the musician said. “But there’s a message, too. About how people judge us by the way we look. You learn a lesson you didn’t expect at the start.”
The couple live together in New York, per The Times.
Back in 2016, Gaonkar collaborated with Byrne to write an immersive theater performance for the Stanford Arts Institute. They worked together again on another theatrical experience in 2022.
Over the years, the pair have attended several events together — most recently, a special screening for My Mother’s Wedding in August.

Byrne and Gaonkar have both been previously married.
Byrne was married to Lutz from 1987 to 2004. The former couple share daughter Malu, and two grandchildren.
Gaonkar was previously married to financier Oliver Haarmann, who PEOPLE confirmed in September 2024 was dating Reese Witherspoon after they were seen spending time together in New York City earlier that year in July. Gaonkar and Haarmann divorced after welcoming two children together.
