The Chicago Cubs are gearing up for another postseason push. Despite missing out on the division title, Chicago will be part of the playoff picture. While they’re still fighting for a good seed and potential elimination, it seems more and more likely that the team will head to the postseason.

Unfortunately for them, one of their key players suffered an injury in one of the last games of the season. Star pitcher Kevin Gausman has been solid for the most part for the Cubs this season. Unfortunately, against the Miami Marlins, Gausman exited the game suddenly after a diving tag attempt.
The silver lining for Cubs fans is that Gausman was probably already gone at that point anyway. It was the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Cubs pitcher was up to 101 pitches before the diving tag attempt. While Gausman looked like he was in some serious pain, the timing of his exit gives some hope that what he felt was not that serious.
Gausman has been passable for the Cubs this year. The former Toronto Blue Jays has a 5.04 ERA in his eight appearances for Chicago this season after being traded in the middle of the year. It’s a number that’s slightly below average, but he’s somehow recorded a 4-2 record during those eight appearances. At the very least, he provides much-needed relief to a battered pitching staff.

A loss to the Marlins means that the Cubs’ spot in the Wild Card round isn’t quite secure yet. Their magic number is one, which means that one more win or an Arizona Diamondbacks loss secures their spot in the postseason. With the Diamondbacks in their game at the time of writing, Chicago will need to win one more game to finalize their spot in the final dance.
