Although the show may be called Emily in Paris, this season, it’s looking like another round of Emily in Rome. Season 5 of Darren Star‘s long-running guilty pleasure series is just over one month from hitting Netflix again and catching up with Lily Collins‘s it-girl as she settles into life in Italy as the new head of Agence Grateau Rome. However, that doesn’t mean that the city of lights and everyone there is being left behind. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview series for upcoming winter television and film titles, we’re excited to share a new look at what Emily’s dashing ex, Alfie, played by Lucien Laviscount, is up to after moving on from their relationship.

Our image shows Alfie seated at what appears to be a nightclub, living his best life with a few drinks and, maybe, some company. The first part of Season 4 saw Emily ultimately choose to be with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) after it was clear she and Alfie were not what each other needed in partners. It was crushing, but getting back in touch with the city was a healing experience for him. He even moved on into a new committed relationship with a mystery girl, choosing to encourage his chef friend and former romantic rival to fight for Emily’s love rather than trying to get involved again. All indications are that he’s in a good place heading into Season 5 and will be back in action in Paris. Then again, if he’s remaining in Emily’s orbit at all, there’s no telling what kind of developments await him.

Season 5 of Emily in Paris will be split not just between Paris and Rome, but also Venice, where she’ll take in the city’s scenic canals. Her story for this run of episodes revolves around the “professional and romantic challenges” of living life in her new home while she manages Agence Grateau’s new office. Everything seems to be lining up perfectly at first, especially with Emily’s budding new relationship with the “Italian Stallion” Marcello Muratori (Eugenio Franceschini). However, as always seems to happen to the American, her plans start to get complicated. A work idea completely blows up in her face, threatening to break her heart and derail her career, and ultimately leaving Emily to lean back into her old French lifestyle. If that weren’t enough, a big secret comes to light that jeopardizes one of her closest relationships, forcing her to confront the conflict honestly and emerge on the other side with stronger bonds and a renewed focus.

‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 Has Undergone a Cast Shake-Up

Much of the cast that has helped make Emily in Paris a mainstay on Netflix will be back in Season 5 despite some initial uncertainties. That includes Emily and her three love interests, as well as Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie, Thalia Besson, Paul Forman, and Arnaud Binard. Absent this time around, however, is Camille Razat, who opted to leave Paris behind after she felt Camille’s storyline had “naturally come to an end.” It’s a major loss for the series, though Star also saw quite the infusion of talent for the new season, including Oscar nominee Minnie Driver, alongside Bryan Greenberg, and Michèle Laroque. Driver is playing Sylvie’s royal friend, Princess Jane, while Laroque plays another old friend in Yvette, and Greenberg enters as Jake, another American living in Paris.

Emily in Paris returns for Season 5 on December 18 on Netflix. Check out our exclusive image above and stay tuned here at Collider throughout the rest of the week for more from our winter preview series.
