  • Prince Harry is currently visiting Toronto, Canada, taking part in Remembrance Day events, which is the U.K. equivalent of the U.S.’s Veterans Day.
  • Speaking onstage on November 6, the Duke of Sussex thanked Toronto, saying, “You provided a wife for me.”
  • “This city will always mean a great deal to me,” he added.

Prince Harry is in Canada this week—Toronto, specifically—and he had romantic words to say about his wife Meghan Markle and their connection to the city while giving a speech on November 6.

The Duke of Sussex spoke at the True Patriot Love Foundation National Tribute Dinner on Thursday and spoke about the Duchess of Sussex’s connection to Toronto, where she filmed Suits for many years and where she was living in 2016 when they met.

“Truthfully and jokes aside, this city will always mean a great deal to me,” Harry said onstage, per People. “You provided a wife for me.”

The Invictus Games founder also alluded to the 2017 Invictus Games, held in Toronto, where Harry and Meghan made their public debut as a couple that September. “You hosted the Invictus Games in 2017—touchstones in my life both professionally and personally,” he added.

“Together we witnessed something extraordinary,” Harry continued. “The strength of the human spirit that shines when people who have served rise again through sport, teamwork, and a redefined purpose.” He added, “That spirit, the devotion to those who serve, is something Canada embodies like no other nation.”

Harry continued that Meghan “lived in Toronto for years and has deep affection for this city, so much so that many people around the world believe she’s Canadian.” Alluding to his controversial decision to wear a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap during the World Series—where Meghan’s hometown team the Dodgers played and ultimately beat the Toronto Blue Jays—Harry said, “I think we can forgive a native Californian for her Dodgers loyalty, even if for just one evening.”

Harry addressed “hatgate” elsewhere in his speech, calling it “the blue-hatted elephant”: “I am truly sorry for wearing a Dodgers hat,” he said of his appearance alongside Meghan at game four of the World Series on October 28. “No excuses, but there were two reasons for wearing it. First, our host that night was the owner of the Dodgers, and I believed it was the polite thing to do. Second, the 900,000-watt floodlights shining down on an ever-increasing bald spot.”

“Given that level of scrutiny, I think I’d even have worn a Yankees cap,” he joked. “Well, maybe not a Yankees cap, but you get my dilemma.”

Following the Invictus Games in 2017, the Games returned to Canada in February of this year, making the country the only nation to host the Games twice—and the Games earlier this year serving as the competition’s first foray into winter sports. Harry launched the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international sports tournament for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans.

In addition to being where Harry and Meghan’s relationship developed in its early days and such an important location for the Invictus Games, Canada is also where Harry, Meghan, and a baby Prince Archie moved briefly after leaving the U.K. in 2020, before eventually landing in California, Meghan’s home state.

Of debuting his relationship in 2017, Harry previously told People, “The Toronto Games were our first time out and about publicly in an official way. We were dating at the time, so it was a lot to take in, but fortunately, we were with the perfect community for that.”
