Peacock has decided the fate of Anthony Mackie‘s hit action series after two seasons. The streamer has announced that Twisted Metal has been renewed and will proceed with a third season, but there’s a catch. David Reed (The Boys, Supernatural) will take over as showrunner with Michael Jonathan Smith exiting the show. It’s unclear at this time if this is due to creative differences or scheduling conflicts, but regarding his exit, Peacock said Smith has “concluded his involvement as showrunner and executive producer.” Peacock has also yet to announce any dates for Season 3 production, but Anthony Mackie is expected to return as John Doe.

Plot details about Twisted Metal Season 3 are being kept under wraps, but the Season 2 post-credits scene gives some idea of where things are going. Calypso (Anthony Carrigan) frames John Doe (Mackie) and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) for murdering the spectators of the Twisted Metal Tournament, and they’re ready to take him down and clear their name. This will inevitably lead to a war between the Insiders and the Outsiders. The Twisted Metal Season 2 finale scored 993 million views, making it the second-highest original returning scripted season of all time for the streamer.

The news of Twisted Metal’s renewal comes after the surprising developments surrounding another popular Peacock series, Poker Face. Poker Face is the bumbling detective comedy starring Natasha Lyonne as detective Charlie Cale, and the show was written by Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi, Knives Out). Peacock recently announced that Poker Face had been canceled after two seasons, but things got even weirder when news broke that the show will likely continue with Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) taking over in the lead role of Charlie Cale.

Twisted Metal is streaming only on Peacock in America, but the series is streaming on HBO Max around the world, where it recently charted in the top 10 in more than 25 countries. Peacock only exists in America, but Sony Pictures made sure that fans outside the U.S. could still experience Mackie’s hit action series. While you wait for the third season of Twisted Metal, be sure to check out Mackie’s latest MCU hit in Captain America: Brave New World, now streaming on Disney+.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Twisted Metal Season 3 and watch the first two seasons on Peacock.
