The popular news outlet shared the interview shortly afterward on X, formerly Twitter, offering context for Murphy’s remarks.
In the celebration footage, Murphy told Bauers, “Just remember when you were on that horses–t Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself?” The remark came as Bauers prepared to enter free agency following Milwaukee’s championship-winning 2026 season.

Murphy also revealed that he called Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after learning the audio had become public. He described their conversation as positive.
The original exchange followed the Brewers’ 4-1 victory in Game 5, which secured the franchise’s first World Series championship.
Bauers caught Brice Turang’s throw for the final out after Trevor Megill induced a grounder from Richie Palacios. He then presented the ball to Murphy during the on-field celebration.

A nearby microphone captured Murphy’s comments about Bauers’ former club while discussing the pending free agent’s future. Bauers played 84 games for New York in 2023, when the Yankees finished 82-80, before joining Milwaukee in a trade.

The Brewers manager described the remarks as part of an ongoing private joke with Bauers about free agency. He said the Yankees came up because Bauers had played there and expressed regret that the conversation became public.
His explanation focused on the challenges of maintaining team cohesion around expensive contracts, rather than criticism of the Yankees’ 2026 roster.
