The Titans released veteran defensive tackle Jordan Elliott on Tuesday unexpectedly after what the team described as “an incident” at its practice facility. Elliott signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Titans in the offseason, following head coach Robert Saleh to Tennessee from the San Francisco 49ers.

Further reporting on the matter revealed that the incident involving Elliott escalated to the point where the defensive tackle went to get a gun from his car during the workday. While the incident ultimately de-escalated, the Titans decided that it was enough to move on from Elliott in the middle of the season.

Here’s a breakdown of what happened with Jordan Elliott.

Jordan Elliott release

The Titans announced on Tuesday that they released defensive tackle Jordan Elliott following an incident involving Elliott last week.

“On Thursday, October 15, there was an incident at our team facility involving Jordan Elliott,” the team said in a statement. “Following our review of the incident, we have made the decision to release Elliott from our roster. We will have no further comment on the matter.”

Tennessee did not initially reveal any details about the situation, but Elliott was not active on Sunday for the first time this season. Later in the day, Easton Freeze of A to Z Sports said that Elliott’s release happened because he got into an altercation with teammate JC Latham on the practice field on Thursday, after which he went to get a gun from his car before John Franklin-Myers talked him down.

Why did Jordan Elliott retrieve a gun?

The Titans didn’t describe the incident between Elliott and Latham upon releasing the defensive tackle, but Elliott had reportedly been dealing with issues away from the facility.

Then, in practice on Thursday, Elliott and Latham got into a fight, which resulted in the coaching staff telling Elliott to leave the field. After practice, Elliott apparently went to get a gun from his car before John Franklin-Myers talked him down.

“Jordan has been having a lot of problems away from the building and obviously he brought it to work with him,” a source told reporter Aaron Wilson. “There was no reason for him to go off like that. Everyone thought that was wild. To overreact like that is absolutely crazy. We’re just glad that no one got hurt and it’s over.”
