FRANKLIN LAKES – Seven hundred wins. Forty-one seasons. One school.
And now, a place among the greatest coaches in New Jersey boys soccer history.
On Monday, Ramapo coach Evan Baumgarten earned the 700th victory of his Hall of Fame career, beating Hackensack 5-1 to become the first North Jersey boys soccer coach to reach the milestone and the fifth across the state.

The victory improved Ramapo to 7-2 and moved Baumgarten’s career record to 700-105-36.
Evan Baumgarten, head soccer coach at Ramapo High School, speaks to NorthJersey.com before his 700th victory, Monday, October 5, 2026, in Franklin Lakes. Baumgarten is the first North Jersey boys soccer coach to reach the milestone.
The milestone places Baumgarten alongside some of the most accomplished figures the sport has produced in New Jersey: Miller Bugliari of Pingry, Tom Breznitsky of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Gene Chyzowych of Columbia and Brian Gibney of Shawnee and King’s Christian.
Baumgarten now sits nine victories shy of tying Gibney for fourth place on the state’s all-time wins list.
Under Baumgarten, Ramapo has built one of New Jersey’s premier soccer dynasties. His teams have captured 29 league championships, 16 Bergen County championships and eight state championships.

Baumgarten is also the first person to win the Bergen County tournament as both a player and a coach. He helped Demarest capture the title as a sophomore before going on to play at the University of Bridgeport. After college, he spent one season as an assistant at Old Tappan before being handed the keys to the Ramapo program at 23.
More than four decades later, he remains in the same spot.

Baumgarten’s impact extends well beyond Ramapo. His coaching tree includes Ramsey girls coach Drew Strohmeyer and Immaculate Heart’s Eric Pfeifer. Last fall, all three guided their programs to sectional championships.

“I’m still on the phone with him all the time,” Strohmeyer said. “You’ve got to use the resources around you and he’s one of the best ever.”
