Kye Robichaux‘s immediate run with the Detroit Lions is over, but a return later this season is not necessarily off the table.
Detroit waived Robichaux from Reserve/Injured with an injury settlement Monday, according to the NFL’s transactions page. The move comes after the running back suffered a foot injury during Detroit’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Robichaux carried eight times for 31 yards before leaving that game. Shortly afterward, Dan Campbell revealed the Lions feared the injury was significant.

“Robichaux is the one who got hurt,” Campbell said. “It looks like he may have broken a bone in his foot.”
Detroit initially waived Robichaux with an injury designation, and he reverted to injured reserve after clearing waivers. The NFL transaction log confirmed that move Aug. 17.
Monday’s injury settlement changes the equation.
Rather than remaining on Detroit’s injured reserve for the entire season, Robichaux becomes a free agent under the terms of the settlement. Once the applicable settlement period expires, a reunion with Detroit could become possible. The Lions themselves noted last week that players released through this process can potentially return later, pointing to Ahmed Hassanein’s situation from last season as an example.

That’s the interesting part here.
Robichaux’s roster push ended at about the worst possible time, just as Detroit’s running back room was being reshuffled by injuries. His departure helped lead to the addition of Trayveon Williams, while the Lions have continued adding healthy backs as the preseason progressed.
Robichaux is not part of the 53-man conversation anymore.
But unlike spending the entire season parked on injured reserve, Monday’s settlement at least creates a path for him to play again once his foot is healthy.
Whether that path eventually leads back to Detroit remains to be seen.
