Eddie Murphy is spilling behind-the-scenes stories from his decades in Hollywood.

In the new Netflix documentary Being Eddie, which tracks the New York native’s meteoric rise from teenage comedian to Saturday Night Live standout to movie star, Murphy, 64, recalls one time when he believes he was propositioned by Oscar-winning actor Yul Brynner and his wife.

“Nobody had as much fun as we had in the ’80s. Nobody,” recalls Murphy. “My 21st party, I had at studio 54.”

“Yul Brynner from The Ten Commandments, he was with his wife, and he was like, ‘How would you like to go back to my apartment with my wife and I and party?’ And I was like, ‘Nah, I’m cool.’ ”

“And I realized when I got older, I was like, ‘Party? He wanted to…’ His wife was smiling. I was like, ‘Did he want me to go f— his wife?’ I was like, ‘What the…’ When I got older, I thought back on it and was like, and now I wish I would’ve went. The story would end better if, you know, ‘Yeah, I went back to Yul Brynner’s spot and f—ed his wife. He was watching me f—. He was going, ‘Et cetera, et cetera…’ ” Murphy continued, quoting a famous line from Brynner’s movie The King and I.

Murphy has shared versions of the story before, with varying levels of detail about Brynner, who died in 1985 at age 65. At the time of his death, he had been wed to ballerina Kathy Lee for two years. Prior to that, he was married to French socialite Jacqueline de Croiset from 1971 to 1981.

“I met Yul Brynner at Studio 54,” he told Seth Meyers in 2024. “Who gets to meet Yul Brynner?”

“And he kinda like… years later, I realized, ‘Was he trying to…? Were they trying to pick me up?’ He was with his wife. I’m like 21 years old old and Yul Brynner is like, ‘Would you like to come back to my house and party? Would you like to come back with my wife and I and party?’ And I was like, ‘What?.. We’re partying right here.’ ”

Murphy’s story about Brynner is one of many he shares in Being Eddie, which gives viewers an intimate look at the Beverly Hills Cop star.

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, director Angus Wall teased what fans can expect.

“There’s a great clip of Eddie on a talk show early on in his career, talking about how he’s always been able to do impersonations and different voices. He talks about how his mom used to ask him, ‘Who’s Eddie? What voice is Eddie’s voice?’ This movie answers that question,” Wall said.

“Eddie has played a lot of different characters over the last 40-plus years, but he has never played himself onscreen before. He opens up his world and his heart, and I think people are going to really enjoy spending time with him,” he continued.

Being Eddie is now streaming on Netflix.
