Nutella has been a national treasure for years. It’s seen me through breakups, finals week study sessions, and Gilmore Girl’s binge fests. For some people, it’s a staple in their lives and pantries. Which is why fans of the spread are furious upon discovering that the classic recipe has been changed to include more sugar and skim milk.
According to BBC, the new recipe contains 8.7 percent powdered skim milk in comparison to the original 7.5 percent while the sugar content has risen from 55.9 percent to 56.3 percent. So in other words, it just got worse for you? The spreads manufacturer, Ferrero confirmed the change in recipe noting that the change makes it lighter and of course contains more sugar. And by light I’m assuming they’re talking about texture because there’s nothing light about Nutella’s caloric count.
Naturally when you change anything that people love the way it is, you’re going to get quite the visceral reaction and pushback and this case is proving to be no different. Angry Nutella fans across the globe have vowed to boycott the brand and have ignited the hashtag, NutellaGate.
One person wrote – “OMG!! They are changing the recipe of Nutella !!! NOOOOOOOO HOW DARE THEY!! Leave the sugar & coco alone!!!” Another said – “If the rumors of Nutella changing their recipe are true, I am boycotting them.” Someone else told it like it is saying – “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! #NutellaGate”
Despite the outcry of opposition, Ferrero is doing its best to reassure the public that the coveted spread has not changed that drastically. They released a statement saying QUOTE – “The quality … and all other aspects of Nutella remain the same.” But I’ll let you guys be the judge.
