After playing Captain America for almost a decade, Chris tweeted that it was time to hang up his shield.
The actor shared the bittersweet news on Twitter with fans, writing QUOTE, “Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
Chris has played Captain America, aka: Steve Rogers, in a grand total of 7 Avengers films since 2011, including ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and of course, the upcoming ‘Avengers 4’. If I’m out of breath just listing those movies, imagine how exhausted Chris must be from running around in all of them for the past 8 years!
Chris announced that he would not be renewing his contract to play Captain America again after ‘Avengers 4’, so whatever the fate of Captain America is in ‘Avengers 4’, fans saw Chris’s departure from the franchise coming. He explained to the New York Times of his decision to retire the role QUOTE, “You want to get off the train before they push you off.”
The plot details of ‘Avengers 4’ have been kept tightly wrapped, of course, but many fans have theorized that either Captain America or Iron Man, or both, will be killed in the film. ‘Captain America’ has always been a symbol of self-sacrifice and doing the right thing no matter what it costs, so we wouldn’t be surprised if he sacrificed himself for the greater good to defeat Thanos.
‘Avengers 4’ opens May 3, 2019, and we are gonna have the tissues ready because this is sure to be the most emotional ‘Avengers’ film yet.
